Welcome to Second Grade!
We have a wonderful year of learning ahead in our FIRST year of being upstairs! We're going to have an exciting year enjoying learning new things! :) Please remember the JOY in learning new things, and note this awesome quote: In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and--SNAP!--The job’s a game! :)
–P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins
Please try to find a few minutes here and there to practice addition and subtraction math facts at home. Check out this site...you can even make your own flashcards!

In Second Grade we take two minute timed math fact tests with 40 problems. Here is a helpful website to use: http://www.dadsworksheets.com/v1/Worksheets.html

Remember, practicing math facts doesn't have to be limited to home. It can be done in the car! Riding in the car can also be a convenient time to practice coin counting and telling time, two more important math skills that we work on in Second Grade.
We also encourage 15-20 minutes of reading at home every day. Research shows that even 15-20 minutes of daily reading dramatically improves student achievement, helps boost test scores, and more importantly, boosts the confidence in reading we want to build and encourage. It's also FUN! Children usually enjoy reading more if they have selected the reading material themselves. Also remember that you can and should take turns reading sentences, paragraphs, or even pages with your child...try silly accents and funny voices to keep reading entertaining, and keep in mind that changing things up, like reading under the covers with a flashlight, can really spice up reading time! :) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have for ideas to keep reading from becoming a chore. Please also remember that reading should be FUN and can be such an enjoyable way to spend time together, unplugged... Thank you so much for all of your extra help at home, we will have an AWESOME year! :)
